Appalachian Gardening Folklore
Welcome
A Brief Synopsis
Gardening is often attributed to older individuals and as serving a primarily aesthetic purpose. The reality is that gardening, especially produce gardening, is steeped in traditions far beyond aesthetics and has high levels of regionality attached. The Appalachian region is a strong example of regional gardening traditions in the United States, and as such, it is the focus of my research this term. To best grasp the gardening traditions of Appalachia, we will examine why Appalachia has gardening traditions, where they may have originated, as well as how gardening traditions can be a form of resistance in Appalachia and beyond.
