Types of Gardening Traditions

Updated: Jun 4, 2023

Gardening traditions are seen as highly communicative regarding socioeconomic standing and other social indicators with the integration of edible plants has been looked down upon (Anderson, 1972). Traditions include storytelling as a way to pass on critical knowledge and the preservation of heirloom varieties to maintain species and beyond (Veto, 2007). The traditions of Appalachian gardening focus on how plants should be grown and sharing the bounty, seen in the material folklore of the plants themselves and the verbal folklore or tradition bearers sharing information through women’s fiction and cookbooks (Limeberry, 2014; Veto, 2007).
